Question: What were the dates of, and how was art reflected in the two eras known as Romanticism and Impressionism? Answer From: MissJayDee Romanticism began in the late 18th century and continues through today. It encourages intuition, feeling, inspiration, and the genius of human creativity, over reason or logic. It looks on nature as something to be experienced, rather than clinically discussed and examined. Romanticism was a reaction to industrial civilization. The Romantic believes in self governing, that the individual is responsible for their moral decisions. The French revolution was the first unfolding of the dynamism of Romanticism in Western civilization, because of its fight for self rule and individual rights. There are different types of Impressionism (Mid 19th century): 1) Broken color method: objects are reproduced by means of brush strokes of various colors placed next to each other. Instead of mixing colors together on a palette, color is stroked on separately and the eye of the observer mixes them. (Ex. Monet) 2) Using light in a different way: using patches of color, rather than differences in value to imply lighting. (Ex. Manet) 3) Pointillism: painting by means of dots of pure color. The most subtle ranges in form and color could be shown by changing the combination of colors of the dots. (Ex. Surrat)
